Chon Buri pickup truck crash kills elderly man and injures 4 others

A Chon Buri pickup truck crash killed one person and injured four others on Monday. The crash happened when one pickup truck rear-ended another on 344 Road in the Nong Phai Kaeo sub-district of Ban Bueng district.

Rescuers arrived on the scene to find a grey Mitsubishi with a demolished bumper and a bronze Toyota Revo lying upside down. Rescuers were able to get four people, including the driver, out of the Mitsubishi. All of the victims sustained injuries, with one person suffering a broken leg. The four were brought to Ban Bueng Hospital.

The situation took a turn for the worse when rescuers discovered a man, 70 year old Pongsak Preamsakchai, trapped beneath one of the pickups. They asked a crane truck stuck in traffic nearby to move the wreckage to rescue Preamsakchai. However, he later succumbed to his injuries upon arrival at the hospital.

The driver of the Toyota Revo, 23 year old Thanapat Kaewlai, said that he became briefly distracted as he attempted to turn his car and failed to notice the pickup in front of him. Thanapat then rear-ended into the Mitsubishi, local media reported.

The driver of the Mitsubishi, 70 year old Anant Sabai, reported that the force of the collision caused his vehicle to spin and land upside down.

The drivers were both injured, and Ban Bueng Police said that they would summon both drivers after they had fully recovered.

Thailand was ranked the second most dangerous country to drive in according to a driver’s educational platform. There were 21,052 accidents in 2020, and 11,138 accidents in 2021. About 20% of accidents involved motorcycles, while 8% involved six-wheel trucks, and 8% involved trucks with at least 10 wheels.

Last month, another crash in Chon Buri killed a 51 year old woman in the Sri Racha district. The crash involved a garbage truck and a motorbike. The garbage truck driver said the motorbike driver cut in front of his truck, and that he couldn’t stop on time, and crashed into her.
