Pad Thai in top 5 most requested meals by US foodies
A recent survey revealed that the popular Thailand dish pad Thai is the fourth most-requested meal by US foodies.
US food delivery platform Grubhub announced the result of its top food ordering trends in its report “2022 Delivered: A Year of Takeout Wrapped in Layers of Comfort,” and pad Thai ranked the fourth most–delivered dish to the doorsteps of hungry Americans.
Pad Thai, as all lovers of Thai cuisine will tell you, is a stir-fried rice noodle dish commonly served as a street food in the Land of Smiles. It is typically made with rice noodles, shrimp, peanuts, scrambled eggs, and bean sprouts, among other vegetables. The ingredients are fried in a wok.
Pad Thai’s original name is “Gway Teow Pad Thai.” “Gway Teow” is a Chinese term for “rice noodles,” suggesting a Chinese influence on the dish. Some historians believe that a similar dish was brought to the Ayutthaya Kingdom by Chinese traders in the 1700s. The rest of the name also offers insight: “Pad” means “fried” and “Thai” refers to the dish’s Thai-style preparation.
The burrito claimed the top spot as people sought comfort in its gooey layers. Burritos filled with a variety of ingredients such as sausage, eggs, guacamole, and sour cream were ordered over four million times, a significant increase from its eighth-place ranking the previous year.
