Pick-up driver slams into roadside steel shop, injures three

A drunk driver bounced off the side of a road in Ubon Ratchathani and then skidded side-ways into a roadside shop where young Songkran revellers were waiting quietly outside to greet passing vehicles.

The crash ended up injuring three as the people waiting outside the shop scattered to get away from the black pick-up as it slammed into the shops.

The incident happened outside the Phuwadet Steel Shop in the Don Mot Daeng district about 4.30pm on Saturday afternoon.

The video show the dramatic turn of events that could have easily changed a simple Songkran celebration into a disaster.

The 32 year old driver, identified as Chaiwat Detchakhamphu, was tested and later confirmed with a blood alcohol reading of 207 mg/dl, four times over the legal limit.

An initial investigation reveals that the pickup driver was heading out to visit friends in Lao Sue Kok district when he lost control of his vehicle at a curve in the road, it bounced off one side of the road and careered into the roadside steel shop.

Three people were injured following the crash.

Officers have now impounded his pick-up and are waiting for the official results of his alcohol blood readings and medical reports on the condition of the people injured in the incident before pressing charges. One of the people injured was a child who was inside the shop at the time.
