Truck crashes into canal after driver struck by unidentified object
Thai police are on the hunt to find out what mysterious object struck a lorry driver on the head as he sped along the Chon Buri bypass. The driver was knocked out cold, sending his truck careering into a crash, and leaving him with serious injuries.
Officers from Mueang Chon Buri Police Station rushed to the scene of the six-wheel truck accident on the bypass road at around 4.30pm yesterday, September 26. The damaged truck was found in a canal alongside the road.
The 42 year old truck driver, Auttaphong, suffered a severe head wound, and his skull was found to be fractured.
Sakmongkhon, an assistant manager at the truck company Auttaphong worked for, later arrived at the scene to assess the damage. He informed police that Auttaphong was en route to deliver goods from Laem Chabang Port to Suvarnabhumi International Airport.
Sakmongkhon reviewed the dashcam footage and later shared it with the public. The video showed Auttaphong lighting a cigarette while driving when suddenly, the hard object, which remains unidentified, entered through the window and struck him in the head.
Auttaphong lost consciousness and control of the vehicle. The truck veered from the middle lane to the right, colliding with a guardrail before swerving to the left and crashing into the roadside canal.
Sakmongkhon suspected the object might be a rock or a steel screw but was unsure of its origin. He expressed hope that the police would successfully identify the object, as it posed a significant danger to motorists.
Police told Channel 7 that they would obtain additional security camera footage from locals living along the road to help identify the object and determine its source.
In a related report, a disabled Thai man was arrested in July for throwing a rock at a car on Banthat Thong Road in Bangkok. The suspect admitted to the violent act, stating that he did it out of stress. Fortunately, the rock did not break through the window and strike the driver.
Two other suspects involved in rock-throwing incidents were arrested this week in the Isaan province of Bueng Kan and the northern province of Lampang. Drug use and its associated mental effects led them to commit the crimes.
