Thai app-based delivery rider steals gemstone rings to buy Yaba

Suspect used rented account, making him harder to identify

A Thai delivery rider stole four gemstone rings at the weekend after being hired by a store in the central province of Nonthaburi to deliver them to a customer in Bangkok. Police made a swift arrest on the same day.

The owner of a jewellery store, 43 year old Sanornit, filed a complaint at Bang Srimueang Police Station in Nonthaburi on on Sunday, May 26, after four rings worth 24,500 baht failed to arrive at her customer’s home.

Sanornit said she booked the delivery service via an application to send the rings from her shop in Nonthaburi to a customer in the Wongwian Yai area of Bangkok. The products were expected to arrive within one hour, but the customer did not receive them, and there was no contact from the rider regarding any delay.

Sanornit repeatedly attempted to contact the rider via the phone number provided in the application, but received no response.

She provided police with the rider’s details from the app, but it was discovered that the account did not belong to the thief. Officers found that the suspect had rented the account from someone else to work as a delivery rider.

To identify the actual suspect, police reviewed security camera footage from Sanornit’s shop and nearby locations, eventually managing to arrest the thief later that same afternoon. The man was identified as 28 year old Wasan.

Wasan told police that he had rented the delivery app account for 100 baht per day and earned about 400 to 500 baht daily from deliveries. However, his earnings were insufficient to cover his expenses, which led him to commit the theft.

He confessed that he realised the items were valuable as soon as he accepted the delivery task from a jewellery store.

Upon inspecting the package, he discovered the gemstone rings and planned to sell them to cover daily expenses and to buy methamphetamine, also known as yaba.

Police urged all users of delivery applications to treat this case as a cautionary example. They recommended verifying the identity of riders to ensure it matches the profile shown in the app, which would aid in tracking them down if problems arise.

Officers also warned delivery riders against renting out their accounts, as they could face legal consequences if the renter commits a crime using the account.
