A Thai abbot in the northern province of Lampang denied leaving the monkhood after a leaked audio recording revealed him engaging in a sex phone call with a woman.

The leaked audio was shared by locals living near the temple in the Phichai sub-district of Lampang province. The male voice in the recording is alleged to be that of the 56 year old abbot, while the female voice reportedly belongs to a 61 year old woman who is the wife of the abbot’s chauffeur.

MGR Online reported that the woman, though older than the abbot, is attractive and still in good shape. She previously worked as a caddy at a golf course in the province.

In the audio, the alleged abbot was heard asking the woman to engage in a sexual phone conversation. They proceeded to discuss sexual acts, asking each other to perform various activities and moaning. They told each other they reached orgasm before hanging up the call.

Locals in the area informed the media that they already filed a complaint with the National Office of Buddhism. During questioning, the abbot admitted that the voice was his and promised to leave his monkhood after the end of Buddhist Lent.

However, the abbot broke his promise, leading the locals to release the audio again in their quest for justice. Nevertheless, another group of residents in the area supported the abbot and wanted him to remain at the temple, as he had been helping and supporting them for a long time.

MGR Online reported that many new constructions are visible at the temple, with numerous renovations and improvements underway. The temple also features a museum of rare Buddhist antiques, allowing visitors to learn more about the development of Buddhism in Thailand.

The sub-district abbot, Pheakru Worradit Wimol, told the media that the district abbot level and the Lampang Provincial Office of Buddhism acknowledged the issue and would conduct an investigation as soon as possible to determine whether the accused abbot would be removed from his position.
