Taiwan sent back a 5-tonne shipment of Thai tea mix after the country’s Food and Drug Administration found traces of insecticide that exceed the limit.

The ChaTraMue mix for the orange-coloured milk tea is widely available in Thailand. The company Cha Thai International says the products are safe and the level of pesticide residue is within safe limits, in line with the regulation set by Thailand’s Food and Drug Administration.

The 2 countries have different regulations when it comes to the amount of insecticide residue allowed in food products. The Thai FDA limits the maximum residue level of the pesticide Fipronil to 0.005 parts per million (ppm) while the Taiwanese FDA set the levels to a maximum of 0.002 ppm.

Other shipments of ChaTraMue instant tea mix, also known as “Number 1 Brand Tea,” have been allowed to enter Taiwan in the past. The brand was established in 1945 and has branches in 8 countries including in China and Hong Kong. The instant tea is imported and distributed in Taiwan by the Taipei-based company Bos Lifestyle.
