Scorching season begins: Thailand braces for blistering heatwave

Thailand has officially entered its sizzling summer season, with temperatures set to soar over the coming months. The Meteorological Department confirmed that winter is over, paving the way for a heatwave that is expected to last until mid-May.
Weather forecasters warn that temperatures will gradually climb, with parts of the country expected to experience scorching conditions. Residents in central and northeastern Thailand have been advised to limit outdoor activities, as a heatwave is predicted from today, March 1 through Thursday, March 6, with temperatures potentially reaching a blistering 40°C.
The shift in seasons comes as Thailand experiences the effects of La Niña, which typically brings cooler temperatures. However, forecasters suggest that this summer may not be as severe as previous years due to the lingering effects of the phenomenon. Despite this, the heat will still be intense, especially in urban areas where concrete and asphalt trap heat, creating stifling conditions.

Officials are urging the public to take precautions against heat-related illnesses such as heatstroke and dehydration. People are advised to stay hydrated, wear light clothing, and avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight, especially during peak daytime hours.
Meanwhile, meteorologists have noted an increase in humidity, which could lead to sudden and intense thunderstorms in some regions. These sporadic storms may provide brief relief from the heat but are unlikely to significantly cool the overall temperature trend, reported Bangkok Post.
With Thailand’s summer now in full swing, locals and tourists alike are bracing for the heatwave in the months ahead. Experts recommend staying informed through official weather updates and taking necessary precautions to stay safe during the hottest period of the year.

The Meteorological Department has warned of thunderstorms affecting five regions, including Bangkok, today. Temperatures in upper Thailand are set to rise, while central and eastern areas may experience storms due to prevailing southern and southeastern winds. Residents are advised to take health precautions and avoid prolonged exposure to the heat. Meanwhile, eastern winds over the Gulf of Thailand, the southern regions, and the Andaman Sea will bring minimal rainfall to the South. Authorities urge the public to stay updated on weather conditions and prepare for sudden changes as the country experiences shifting seasonal patterns.
