Police vehicle attacked in Yala, one officer killed
An armoured police vehicle was severely damaged in an ambush involving a bomb and gunfire in Yala, Thailand, resulting in the death of one officer.
In the evening yesterday, December 26, a violent incident occurred in Thanto, a district in Yala province. An explosive device was detonated by unidentified assailants targeting border patrol police officers, followed by gunfire.
The officers from the Special Task Force 4413 were travelling in an armoured vehicle to their base at Border Patrol Police Company 441 when the attack took place. The assailants struck on the road near Baan Charo Pae, Village 3, leading to significant damage to the government vehicle.
“The explosion severely damaged the armoured vehicle, leading to tragic consequences,” reported a local source.
Sarawit Chumchuen, holding the position of squad leader with the Border Patrol Police Division 44, succumbed to injuries while being transported to Thanto Hospital.
In addition to the bombing, the perpetrators obstructed the road by cutting down trees, scattering metal spikes, and placing suspicious objects along the route. These actions were aimed at delaying any pursuit by the police. Police have launched an investigation and are actively pursuing those responsible for the attack, reported KhaoSod.
“We are intensifying efforts to apprehend the culprits and bring them to justice,” stated a spokesperson for the police.

Troops have been deployed to secure the region, establish checkpoints, and monitor escape routes rigorously. There is an immediate focus on preventing further incidents and ensuring the safety of both officers and civilians.
