Police suspect a Thai woman of being involved in a criminal operation after she claimed that 10 million baht in cash went missing following a fire at her home in Nonthaburi province near Bangkok.

The 27 year old Thai woman, Nittaya Trisukhon, filed a complaint with officers at Rattanathibet Police Station at 5pm on Sunday, February 23, reporting that a fire broke out in her bedroom within the two-storey house in Nonthaburi.

A team of firefighters rushed to the scene and successfully brought the fire under control shortly afterwards. However, Nittaya said that 10 million baht in cash disappeared. She claimed that she placed the money in a cabinet near her bed and suspected that it might have been burned in the fire.

Officers inspected her bedroom and found no traces of burned cash, raising suspicions about Nittaya’s claim and the fire itself. As the fire was not severe, officers were confident that if the money really existed and was burned, there would be evidence of it remaining in the room.

During questioning, Nittaya claimed that she had a total of 20.5 million baht in cash. A woman named Fern allegedly hired another woman, Dear, to transfer the money into Nittaya’s bank account and to nine other family members.

Dear would then instruct Nittaya to withdraw 3 million baht whenever required. After withdrawing the cash, Nittaya would bring it home and wait for Dear and Fern to collect it. She earned 10,000 baht for each withdrawal.

Nittaya further stated that she stored an additional 6.5 million baht in cash in her brown Mitsubishi Pajero SUV and approximately 1.5 million baht left in her bank account.

Police also discovered that Nittaya recently spent around 6 million baht on online gambling and lost it all.

Officers were unconvinced by Nittaya’s explanation and suspected her of involvement in an illegal operation, such as money laundering. They are now investigating whether the 10 million baht ever existed and are also conducting a thorough inquiry into the real cause of the fire.

Upon further investigation, police confiscated 6.5 million baht in cash and would return to Nittaya if found innocent.
