Phuket tackles homelessness and begging with new initiative
Phuket officials have embarked on a significant initiative to tackle homelessness and begging in Phuket Town, with a focus on enhancing the lives of vulnerable residents. This proactive effort was spearheaded by Vice Governor Samawit Suphanphai, who led a field visit to Lan Nawamin, off Phuket Road, yesterday, December 23.
The visit was a collaborative endeavour involving key agencies including the Phuket Provincial Office of the Ministry of Social Development and Human Security (MSDHS), Phuket City Municipality, and local law enforcement officials.
The initiative’s primary goal is to identify and support homeless individuals and beggars in a manner that aligns with existing legal frameworks. According to an official report from the field visit, this effort also aims to raise public awareness and foster community participation in reporting cases of homelessness and begging.
During the visit, authorities uncovered makeshift shelters used by homeless individuals and identified five people living in precarious conditions. Officials meticulously documented these cases, conducted drug tests, and initiated steps to integrate the individuals into assistance and rehabilitation programmes.
“This initiative is part of our commitment to restoring dignity and improving the quality of life for those in need. We also call on the public to join us in addressing this issue through understanding and cooperation.”
The initiative highlights a concerted effort to not only legally support vulnerable groups but also to engage the community in understanding and addressing the root causes of homelessness and begging. Through cooperation and increased awareness, the programme seeks to create a more inclusive environment, ensuring that those affected receive the necessary support and rehabilitation.
This move by Phuket officials marks an essential step towards fostering a compassionate and proactive approach to social issues within the community. By documenting cases and conducting drug tests, officials are taking significant strides in addressing the immediate needs of the homeless population while laying the groundwork for long-term solutions, reported The Phuket News.
