In a grand gesture to ease the cost of living for Thai citizens, the Ministry of Commerce is joining forces with over 300 manufacturers, wholesalers, retailers, and convenience stores to roll out a colossal discount campaign. Scheduled to kick off on December 15 and last until January 15, 2024, this initiative is considered a new year present to the public from the government.

This upcoming discount campaign is an extension of a similar endeavour that commenced on October 2, running until December 31. For this venture, the ministry collaborated with 288 business operators, who agreed to reduce prices on over 151,676 items throughout the country. This initiative was no small feat and led to a significant decrease in the cost of living, saving the public between 2-3 billion baht.

Wattanasak Sur-iam, Director-General of the Department of Internal Trade (DIT), anticipates that the upcoming price reduction program will be one of the most large-scale of its kind. It will encompass a broad spectrum of products, from food, beverages, and essential goods to agricultural products and services, assured the DIT chief.

“The department will keep a vigilant eye on 18 product categories, including instant noodles, fresh and canned foods, and medical appliances, to prevent price gouging.”
