Newborn found abandoned in Buriram banana grove
A newborn baby boy was found abandoned in a banana grove in Buriram province yesterday, February 2. The infant was discovered by 75 year old local, Sae Somkool while she was cutting banana leaves.
The baby, believed to be only a few hours old, was covered in ant bites. The police took the infant to Ban Dan Hospital, where he was found to be in good health and weighed 2,840 grammes at birth.
Police Colonel Siriwat Somkitsiri of Ban Dan district ordered an investigation to locate the parents, suspecting they lived nearby. It was soon discovered that the parents were a 16 year old girl and a 17 year old boy who admitted to abandoning the baby out of fear of informing their families.
The 17 year old, identified as A, revealed that he had been secretly dating 16 year old B for over a year. They had not disclosed their relationship to their families, fearing disapproval.
On the night of the incident, B, who was staying over at A’s house, complained of a stomach ache and went to the bathroom. She later returned to bed as if nothing had happened.
A later learnt about the abandoned baby in the banana grove and was informed by B of the situation. They subsequently sought advice from their families and presented themselves to the officers at Ban Dan Police Station to explain the circumstances.
B explained that she lived with her grandmother and was unaware of her pregnancy. On the night of the incident, while visiting A’s house, she experienced stomach pains and went to the bathroom, where the baby was unexpectedly born.
In shock, she placed the baby under a banana tree near the house and watched over him.
Initial investigations suggest that the teenagers lacked guidance during the pregnancy and were unaware of preventive measures, leading to the unplanned pregnancy and eventual abandonment. The police plan to conduct a thorough investigation, including involving a psychologist to help understand the circumstances and provide support for the teenagers and their families, reported KhaoSod.
B is currently under close medical supervision due to postpartum complications.
