Umno amends constitution to streamline new membership applications

The Umno Special General Assembly has recently approved amendments to the party constitution, focusing on membership-related matters to simplify the process for new applicants. The amendments encompass three primary clauses, including Clauses 5, 10, and 18, which address membership registration and the Supreme Council’s (MT) responsibilities.

Umno permanent chairman Badruddin Amiruldin announced the unanimous approval. Earlier, Umno vice-president Mohamed Khaled Nordin presented the amendments, stating that all matters concerning Umno membership would be transferred to a new set of regulations issued by the MT.

“These amendments are proposed to improve, streamline and facilitate the process of membership applications. This is because regulations relating to Umno membership, like other regulations of the party, will be easier to be streamlined or amended when there exists a need,” he said.

Mohamed Khaled further explained that once these regulations fall under the MT’s jurisdiction, any amendments and streamlining of membership matters would no longer necessitate changes to the Umno constitution.

The Umno General Assembly 2023 includes 2,891 delegates from 189 divisions and the Wanita, Youth, and Puteri wings.
