Traditional customs debate: Man seeks suitor online for older sister

The traditional custom of an elder sibling needing to marry before the younger one has led a 28 year old man to launch an online search for a suitor for his 35 year old unmarried sister.

The 28 year old man found himself facing a predicament shared by many in families that adhere to traditional customs, particularly the belief that the elder sibling should get married before the younger one. His 35 year old sister remained nonchalant about her single status, despite it delaying the man’s own plans to marry.

The brother took to social media, posting a photograph of his sister in an attempt to find her a husband. Unexpectedly, the post went viral, with numerous men expressing an interest in marrying his sister, who, at the age of 35, still looked beautiful from all angles.

The brother was overwhelmed by the positive response.

“I had no idea she was considered so attractive. To me, she’s just my ordinary sister and doesn’t compare to my girlfriend.”

In a surprising turn of events, numerous suitors even proposed their dowries to the family. One netizen offered a dowry of 300,000 yuan (1.5 million baht), while another was willing to go as high as 500,000 yuan (2.5 million baht).

This made the brother realise the allure his sister holds in the eyes of others, considering they were willing to shell out a significant amount, much higher than the 200,000 yuan (1 million baht) demanded by his girlfriend, reported Sanook.

The phenomenon of an elder unmarried sibling preventing the younger one from marrying is common in many conservative families. However, the viral post has sparked a conversation about the need to reassess these traditional beliefs in modern society.
