Phuket, an idyllic island in Thailand, regularly known for its tropical bliss, has been in the throes of an intense heatwave. Mercury levels have consistently soared above 35°C, a significant deviation from the 30-year average, causing officials to warn residents and visitors alike. They have been advised to stay vigilant against signs of heatstroke, a life-threatening condition when the body overheats.

The Phuket Met, a local hotspot for meteorological updates located adjacent to the Phuket International Airport, played a pivotal role in issuing this warning. On February 19, the temperature reached a staggering 37.5°C for two days in a row, prompting local officials to make this public announcement, reported Phuket News.

The heatwave had its beginnings last week when Phuket Town recorded a scorching 37.6°C. Since then, the town, a bustling hub, has been gripped by the relentless heat. Day after day, the temperatures climbed, registering at 36.5°C, 38.5°C, 37.4°C, 37.9°C, and finally peaking at 37.5°C.

Meanwhile, a few miles away, the temperatures around the airport area have been reported to reach up to 35°C consistently over the same period, with a slight dip to 33.8°C on the most recent day.

The warning from officials emphasised the potential dangers of such high summer temperatures. They can disrupt the body’s equilibrium, leading to heatstroke. Once the body temperature exceeds 40°C, it can interfere with the circulatory and brain systems, posing serious health risks.

The signs of heatstroke range from mild symptoms such as elevated body temperature, flushed skin, lack of sweat despite the heat, and excessive thirst, to more serious indications. These include dizziness, rapid breathing, shortness of breath, nausea, vomiting, and even fainting.

In the face of such severe weather conditions, the local authorities urged the populace to be proactive in assisting anyone suspected of suffering from heatstroke. They also emphasised that anyone exhibiting severe symptoms should immediately seek medical attention.
