Phang Nga man launches knife attack at Phuket Police Station
In a shocking early-morning rampage, a Phang Nga man stormed into a police station in Phuket armed with a knife, launching an attack on an officer on duty.
The incident occurred just before 3am on Sunday, November 17, when 48 year old Chuaib Phongthin arrived at the Thachatchai Police Station “in a state of distress,” according to police.
Witnesses described how Chuaib kicked open the door of an office, confronting Police Lieutenant Colonel Akkarapol Siwilai, the officer on duty, who attempted to de-escalate the situation. But Chuaib lashed out, slashing Pol. Lt. Col. Akkarapol above his left eyebrow and left arm before fleeing the scene.
The officer was swiftly taken to Bangkok Hospital Siriroj, where he required eight stitches to treat his injuries. Police investigations soon revealed that Chuaib had been admitted to Phang Nga Hospital after a recent traffic accident. Officers tracked him down and arrested him at the hospital, where he had been seeking treatment.
Phuket Provincial Police Commander Police Major General Sinlert Sukhum provided more background, noting that Chuaib’s attack was likely linked to a prior incident. Chuaib was arrested on November 8 for property damage based on an outstanding warrant, sparking frustration within his family.
Chuaib and his relatives returned to the station on November 16, disputing the legality of his arrest, leading to tensions and, reportedly, a bout of “delusional” behaviour. Following this, Chuaib’s family took him to Thalang Hospital for treatment, though he returned to the station hours later, armed and agitated.
In custody, police discovered Chuaib had a documented history of mental health treatment. Region 8 Police Commander Police Lieutenant General Surapong Thanomchit is personally overseeing the case and Pol. Maj. Gen. Sinlert confirmed the officer involved is expected to make a full recovery.
Chuaib now faces serious charges, including attempted murder of an officer and damage to government property, while police continue their investigation into the disturbing attack, reported Phuket News.
