Villagers lobby for expo center

MAI KHAO: About 200 people from Mai Khao yesterday lobbied Governor CEO Pongpayome Vasaputi to designate Tah Chat Chai as the location for the proposed International Exhibition and Convention Center (IECC), so that visitors will spread income among local people. Somporn Tansakul, the leader of the Mai Khao deputation, said that if the government decided to build the center in Tah Chat Chai it would help bring tourism cash to other provinces, including Phang Nga and Krabi. Gov Pongpayome said that three other possible sites had been presented to the government in Bangkok: Saphan Hin, Khao Khad and the land opposite Suan Luang Park on Chao Fa Rd. He explained that the Finance Ministry, the Office of the Prime Minister and the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) would make the selection. However, the Governor said he would make sure that those involved understand that the people of Mai Khao are keen to have the IECC in their area. The Governor said he had no particular preference but would like the center built near the sea, because Phuket is an island.
