PHUKET: Between September 6 and 11, 162 athletes from 29 countries flexed their muscles as they battled against gravity at Saphan Hin’s 4,000-seat Indoor Sports Complex for the 26th Senior Women’s and 45th Senior Men’s Asian Weightlifting Championships .
The event’s opening ceremony was chaired by National Olympic Committee of Thailand President Yuthasak Sasiprapha.
Fifteen athletes from Thailand, seven females and eight males, were among the competitors.
Two of the female athletes were Pimsiri Sirikaew and Sukanya Srisurat.
Ms Pimsiri won Thailand’s first medal in the 2012 Olympic Games (story here). Meanwhile, Ms Sukanya contested the women’s 58kg event in the 27th South East Asian Games to lift the gold medal with the games’ record-breaking effort of 225kg (story here).
The Asian Weightlifting Championships were meant to take place in Nepal. However, due to the earthquake earlier this year, organizers decided to bring the event to Phuket.
