Three dead, 311 injured during Songkran

PHUKET: Three people were killed in traffic accidents in Phuket during the four-day Songkran holiday, according to statistics from the island’s hospitals. The Phuket Provincial Health Office reported that all of the victims died in motorcycle accidents, and all were confirmed to have been under the influence of alcohol. In the same period, 311 people were injured on the roads. While the death toll was half of last year’s figure over the same period, road accident injuries were up slightly from the 305 shown in official statistics for last year. In an effort to curb drunk driving, Phuket Town Police set up a checkpoint at the Saphan Hin entrance from 10 am to 4 pm on Saturday. Ten people were charged after failing breath tests.
