Phuket needs foreign blood

PHUKET: Vachira Phuket Hospital’s blood bank is in need of new donors and Phuket’s foreign residents with Rhesus-negative blood are being called on to sign up as donors before the coming high season.

The blood bank is joining up with Phuket Red Cross to collect the contact details of people living in Phuket with Rh-negative blood who can then be called on during an emergency.

Vichote Burapachanok, medical scientist at the blood bank, told the Gazette that only 0.3% of Thai people have Rh-negative blood.

“We just need the names and addresses of people who have this blood type who would be willing to donate.

“We need to get as many people as possible in case there is a large accident during the high season. Blood can be kept in storage for up to only 35 days,” said K. Vichote.
