Artificial reefs to be deployed off Koh Racha
PHUKET: Dive and tour boats visiting Koh Racha, an island about 25km south of Phuket, are urged to exercise caution there early next month, as work continues to expand artificial reefs in the area.
“We will deploy artificial-reef modules at Plub Pla Bay and Teu Bay from February 2-7,” said Paitoon Panchaiyaphum, director of the Marine and Coastal Resources Conservation Department (DMCR) office in Phuket.
“Please avoid the areas during this period for tourists’ safety, as we will require a large boat and several days to complete this task.”
The artificial reef project at Koh Racha, which initially began in 2006 (story here), has received several extensions over the years.
In particular, the addition of artificial-reef modules in 2009 and the sinking of two boats as dive tour attractions received praise from members of Phuket’s dive industry (story here).
“We apologize for any inconvenience, but we trust that people understand that this project does much to support the local marine environment and improve the natural beauty of the area,” Mr Paitoon said.
“If anyone has any questions, please do not hesitate to call me at 081-173 1146 for more details. We do appreciate your kind cooperation.”
