Thai inmate caught after escaping coffee shop job to see newborn baby

Prisoner faces longer sentence in higher-security prison

A male inmate faces additional jail time after escaping from a prison in Nonthaburi near Bangkok on Saturday, August 23, allegedly because he missed his five month old baby.

The Department of Corrections urged residents to assist officials in tracking down the prisoner, 33 year old Anuchit Sooksud, who escaped while working at Hubpoei Coffee Shop, operated by Nonthaburi Provincial Prison, at around 12.40am on Saturday.

Anuchit had been arrested for attempted theft and sentenced to one year in prison. He had already served eight months of his sentence and was due to be released in four months.

Assigned to work at the coffee shop with other inmates, Anuchit seized the opportunity to steal a prison official’s motorcycle and rode away still dressed in his orange prison uniform.

Officers from Mueang Nonthaburi Police Station reviewed security camera footage and began tracking him. They later discovered the discarded orange uniform beneath the Maha Chesadabodindranusorn Bridge, but Anuchit was not there.

A subsequent investigation led officers to arrest him at a relative’s home in Ang Thong province at 2pm yesterday, August 24. He was taken to the police station for questioning about his motives.

At first, Anuchit claimed that he had been bullied by fellow inmates and used the coffee shop work detail as his chance to escape. However, officers doubted his explanation and pressed him further until he admitted that he fled because he missed his newborn baby.

Anuchit’s mother later arrived at the police station and told the media she understood that her son longed to see his five month old child. However, she urged him to be patient and serve his sentence until the end so that he could reunite with his family properly.

As a result of his escape and motorcycle theft, Anuchit now faces additional prison time. He will be transferred to Khao Bin Prison in Ratchaburi province, a higher-security facility. The Department of Corrections has not yet clarified the exact length of his extended sentence.
