High-speed chase: Thai mother rescues autistic son from gang

A Thai mother successfully rescued her autistic son from a call centre scam gang following a high-speed chase on a road in the Isaan province of Buriram.
The 38 year old mother, Suthiya, contacted Channel 8 to share her and her son’s experience in order to issue a warning to others. Suthiya stated, “Call centre scammers are still everywhere around us.”
The mother revealed that her 19 year old son has autism but he is capable of taking care of himself and possesses skills with electronic devices. He can repair mobile phones and other audio equipment. He recently moved in to live with her in Buriram and spent most of his time seeking more knowledge about electronic devices online.
Previously, her son had mentioned that he had been invited to work in the Isaan province of Sa Kaeo and would earn 20,000 baht per month. Suthiya suspected that the job offer was a trick by a call centre scam gang, so she said he could not go.
However, on the day of the incident, she received a call from her son while she was at work, informing her that he was going to Sa Kaeo for the job. Suthiya did not give her permission, and her son abruptly hung up the phone.

Worried about her son’s safety, she rushed home from her workplace to check on him. She saw her son getting into a stranger’s car, a black Toyota Camry sedan.
The car drove away with her son, so Suthiya jumped on her motorcycle after it and managed to catch up when the car stopped at a red light.
Suthiya knocked on the car window but the three strangers inside ignored her. The gang then changed direction to avoid being stuck at the red light.
Suthiya continued the chase until the gang eventually parked. She introduced herself as the boy’s mother and questioned why they tried to flee.

Before leaving her workplace, Suthiya had contacted the police to report the matter. While she was discussing the situation with the gang, the police called her back to follow up on the case.
Upon hearing Suthiya speaking with the police, the gang released her son and immediately sped away from the scene.
Afterwards, Suthiya checked the online conversation between her son and a woman from the gang and became convinced that they were members of a call centre scam operation.

The woman deceived her son into believing he would work as an administrator in Sa Kaeo but Suthiya suspected that he would have been forced to open a mule account or work as a scammer.
Suthiya said she never expected this to happen to her and her son. She expressed relief that she managed to rescue him, adding that if she had been just a few minutes later, she might have lost her son forever.
