Englishman’s annual pilgrimage to Thailand to honour wife’s memory
In a touching tale of devotion that could soften even the hardest of hearts, an Englishman makes an annual pilgrimage to Thailand to honour the memory of his late wife.
Andrew, a former soldier turned factory worker, jet-sets to Udon Thani every year to pay tribute to Samorn Prasomsri, his beloved Thai wife who passed away almost five years ago after a battle with cancer.
Reporters from Wat Si Suwanmongkol, located in Ban Si Mueang, Ban Dung District, caught up with Andrew today, November 7. The locals know Andrew well; his story of enduring love has become a cherished legend in this village.
The love affair began in Pattaya, where Andrew met Samorn, a widow with three children—one daughter and two sons. Their romance blossomed, leading them to build a life together in Ban Si Mueang, complete with homes for the family.
Andrew’s fondness for Samorn was unparalleled; he tenderly refers to her as “his last love.” Despite their years apart since her passing, his heart remains tethered to her. During her illness, Andrew cared for Samorn with unwavering devotion.
Her death left him in a state of despair, leading him to drink heavily. Concerned for his wellbeing, his sister intervened, bringing him back to England. Yet, grief couldn’t sever his connection to Thailand or the sacred spot where Samorn’s ashes rest.
Every year, except for the last when a heart valve surgery kept him grounded, Andrew returns to Wat Si Suwanmongkol, reported Channel 7. There, he meticulously tends to the area around Samorn’s stupa, replacing wilted flowers daily despite the sweltering heat. His commitment to this yearly ritual has not only drawn admiration from locals but has also become a beacon of unwavering love and respect.
Andrew’s annual pilgrimage is an ode to his wife, and he doesn’t hesitate to praise the qualities of Thai women, leaving the village’s women both impressed and envious of the depth of his affection.
“This wife will be my last.”
