Bun fight: Mother and son escape as car rolls into Bangkok bakery

A Thai woman and her son narrowly escaped danger after a 64 year old driver crashed her sedan into a bakery in Samut Prakan province near Bangkok.

CCTV footage of the accident went viral on Thai social media, with netizens expressing their relief upon learning that the worker at the Bakerlicious bakery and her young son were unharmed. The accident occurred at 8.39am on Monday, March 24.

In the video, the female worker was cleaning the store while her son was walking towards her. Moments after the boy passed the front door, a grey sedan crashed into the shop, shattering the glass entrance and hitting a product shelf in the middle of the store.

The front wheel of the car continued to turn, as if the driver pressed the accelerator instead of the brake. Fortunately, the product shelf and the main pillar of the shop managed to stop the vehicle.

The worker and her son were seen embracing each other in shock on the right side of the store. She was heard repeatedly asking her son if he was injured.

The driver explained to the bakery owner that she mistakenly applied the wrong gear. She intended to reverse her car but accidentally put it into drive, leading to the crash.

The car insurance would cover the cost of the damages. but the process would take time. As a result, the bakery owner replaced the front glass door herself for 18,000 baht and would later seek reimbursement from the insurance company.

Some netizens criticised the driver, suggesting that she should avoid driving at her age.

Others argued that the ability to drive should depend on a person’s health and the condition of their vehicle rather than age, noting that Thailand does not have a legal age limit for drivers.
