Crash sends concrete pile through bus window, injuring driver and fare collector

A public bus crashed into a truck carrying concrete piles on a road in Pathum Thani province near Bangkok this morning, October 23, injuring the driver and the female fare collector.

Khlong Luang Police Station received a report of the accident involving a bus and a truck carrying concrete piles at 5.30am. The incident occurred on Phahonyothin Road in Khlong Nueng sub-district, Khlong Luang district, Pathum Thani Province. Police arrived at the scene with rescue workers from the Ruamkatanyu Foundation.

The damaged bus, number ปอ 39, operates between Talat Thai Market in Pathum Thani and Victory Monument in Bangkok.

The crash caused one of the concrete piles to break through the bus windows and enter the passenger cabin. The male bus driver and the female conductor were injured and taken to Phra Rang Sit Hospital by rescuers.

The truck involved was carrying 22-metre concrete piles from Lop Buri province. The driver, 48 year old Manote Chaocharnkhong, told police that the accident occurred as he was about to turn into Bangkok University. He said all other vehicles on the road had stopped to let him turn, except for the bus.

Kapook reported that the accident major a heavy traffic jam stretching over 10 kilometres.

Officers called a tow truck to remove the bus and deployed a large crane to clear the damaged concrete piles. Road maintenance staff were also called to clean up broken glass from the road.

The bus driver and fare collector remain under treatment, and details regarding their condition have not been released as of time of reporting.

Another bus accident in Bangkok was reported in February, when the driver of route 167 lost control on a slippery road covered in oil. The bus collided with an electric pole cable, lifting its front wheel off the ground. Fortunately, the driver, the fare collector, and three passengers escaped unharmed.
