Krabi Airport’s runway damaged
A passenger using Facebook account, Atipoj Srisukhon, posted a picture of a cracked runway at Krabi International Airport, expressing the concern about the safety today (March 2). The damage is several metres wide but is limited to the extreme ends of the runway at both ends.
The Director of Krabi International Airport, Atthaporn Nuang-Udom, said that he acknowledged the matter and damage to the runway surface.
“I think the crack was caused by the heavy rain for the past few days and the spot is a place where planes usually turn off the runway onto the general arrival apron. It doesn’t disturb the take-off and landing of the planes as the cracks are at the end edge of the runway,” he said.
“However, we will rush to fix the cracks as fast as possible but we have to choose the proper time that will limit disturbing flights as there are so many flights these days. On March, 5, we will discuss with the contractor to come and start the process.”
Phuket International Airport had two days of chaos this week as repairs were made to the runway with similar cracks. Overnight repairs over two days, between 2am and 7am, caused the rescheduling of 66 flights and all sort of passenger processing problems either side of the repair times as airlines squeezed into the shoulders either side of the time when the runway was unserviceable.
