Thai thief assaults and steals 10,500 baht from old man in Bangkok
Police arrested a Thai man for physically assaulting an 84 year old victim to steal 10,500 baht in cash on the side of a road in Bangkok on Monday, January 27.
The daughter of the 84 year old victim filed a complaint with officers at Rat Burana Police Station after her father suffered a 5-centimetre-long and 2-centimetre-deep head wound from the brutal assault at around 1am on Monday.
She presented CCTV footage of the assault as evidence. In the video, the attacker was seen approaching the elderly man on a motorcycle and speaking with him. Another clip showed the suspect attacking the victim until he collapsed to the ground.
The suspect then grabbed money from the victim’s trouser pocket and fled the scene on his motorcycle.
In an interview with Channel 7, the victim revealed that the attacker pretended to ask him for a cigarette. He refused, saying he left his cigarettes at home. The victim said he felt unsafe and attempted to leave but he was too slow.
The attacker took 10,500 baht in cash as well as the victim’s identification card. The old man said he had been saving the money for years by collecting and selling recycled rubbish.
The victim stated that he wanted his money back because he had planned to take it to his home province, Phichit, in Isaan. While the amount might not seem like much to others, it was a significant sum for him.
His daughter told the media that she initially planned not to report the matter to the police but changed her mind after seeing the footage.
She noted that the suspect did not even need to use force to steal from her father but chose to be violent regardless.
Police reviewed additional security cameras in the area and arrested the suspect, identified as 49 year old Praphat, today, January 30, at his home.
Praphat claimed that the stolen money did not amount to 10,500 baht as the victim stated. He said he had spent all but 600 baht on food.
The penalty issued against Praphat has not been disclosed to the public. However, based on similar cases, he could face imprisonment of five to ten years and a fine of between 100,000 and 200,000 baht for committing theft through assault and using a vehicle to facilitate the crime, according to Section 339 of the Criminal Law.
