23 tourists stung by ‘Bluebottles’ in Songkhla

Twenty-three tourists have been stung by bluebottle jellyfish, properly referred to as the Portuguese man o’ war (Physalis physalis), at two popular beaches in Songkhla during the past three days, a senior public health official reported today.

Doctor Uthitsak Hariratanakul, chief Songkhla public health officer, said the 23 swimmers were injured by the jellyfish at the Chalathat and Samila beaches between Saturday and Monday.
Most of the tourists suffered skin burns but one Also suffered breathing difficulties, Uthitsak added.

He said tourists who want to swim at the beaches should be cautious.

If stung you are advised to apply warm water and not rub the affected areas as you’ll push the stings further into your skin. Seek medical attention urgently.
