Parts of Thailand are braced for more wet weather as Tropical Storm Kompasu makes landfall in upper Vietnam. The Thai Meteorological Department has warned of heavy rain for the north-east of the country, while several other regions will be affected by the seasonal monsoon conditions.

The Bangkok Post reports that Kompasu’s wind speed has recorded a high of 100 kilometres an hour at its centre. Yesterday, it was moving in a westerly direction from the upper South China Sea, expected to pass China’s Hainan Island, and hit upper Vietnam before weakening. The TMD has warned of heavy rain for the north-eastern provinces of Mukdahan, Nakhon Phanom, Sakon Nakhon, and Bueng Kan.

Meanwhile, the Bangkok Post reports that heavy rainfall is forecast in other parts of the country, as a result of the southwestern monsoon over the Andaman Sea, the South, and the Gulf of Thailand. The lower North and North-east, Central Thailand, the East, and the South (west coast) are all likely to be affected.

In related news, the governor of Bangkok has updated residents on the flood risk in the capital and surrounding areas. Aswin Kwanmuang says a water station in the Bang Sai district of Ayutthaya has measured the flow of water at 2,817 m³/s, while water around the Pak Khlong Talat flower market in the capital remains below the floodwall. Water levels at the Klong Song, Saen Saep, and Lat Krabang floodgates in east Bangkok are also normal.

Meanwhile, the Bangkok Post reports an update from the Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation in relation to recent flooding as a result of Tropical Depression Dianmu. Between September 23 and October 7, flooding was reported in 1,189 sub-districts, across 224 districts, in 33 provinces. A total of 331,440 homes were affected, with 14 people killed. The DDPM says the situation has improved in 19 of the 33 provinces.
