Grain wreck: Rice spills in 3-truck collision causing major roadblock
A collision involving three trucks caused major disruption on a road in Nonthaburi, with one truck overturning and spilling rice across the road. The incident resulted in injuries and took over three hours to clear the scene.
The accident occurred yesterday, October 23, at 9.30pm on the inbound Kanchanaphisek Road from Bang Bua Thong to Bang Yai, near the Phra Pimol Canal Bridge in Bang Bua Thong district. Police officers from Bang Bua Thong Police Station and rescue workers from Ruamkatanyu Foundation arrived promptly at the scene.
One of the injured was Chaluay, the 86 year old driver of a Hino truck loaded with broken rice grains. Rescue workers extricated him from the vehicle and transported him to Bang Bua Thong Hospital for treatment. His truck had overturned, blocking the road and spilling its cargo.
Nearby, a six-wheeled box truck registered in Chumphon, carrying various goods, was found in the median with significant damage to its front left and right corners. Additionally, two streetlight poles and roadside railings were broken and damaged due to the collision.
Also involved in the incident was a 32-wheeled trailer truck carrying concrete segments for expressway construction. The trailer suffered damage to its front left section, and the concrete segments visibly shifted due to the impact.
Jaratsin, the 42 year old trailer truck driver, reported that he was driving from a warehouse in Lat Lum Kaeo district, Pathum Thani province, heading towards Surat Thani province. He was in the right lane, while the 32-wheeled trailer was in the middle lane.
Truck collision
According to Jaratsin, the 10-wheeled truck carrying rice suddenly cut in front of the 32-wheeled trailer, causing it to lose control and collide with his vehicle, which then veered off into the median. Phon, the 64 year old driver of the 32-wheeled trailer, added that his vehicle, escorted by a pickup truck with siren lights, was travelling in the middle lane when the 10-wheeled truck abruptly changed lanes from the left to avoid construction, crashing into the front and left side of his trailer.
Footage from the dashcam of the 32-wheeled trailer showed the 10-wheeled truck changing lanes from the left to avoid the construction site, leading to the collision with the trailer truck in the middle lane. The ensuing chaos involved all three vehicles, reported KhaoSod.
Police officers stated that after examining the scene and interviewing the drivers of the two trucks, they also collected evidence from the dashcam footage. They plan to interview the 10-wheeled truck driver again once his condition improves. Meanwhile, police worked to clear the spilt rice and the involved vehicles from the road, restoring normal traffic flow by 12.30am today.
