Monk killed, driver injured in Rayong lorry-car collision
A devastating accident at a notorious intersection in Rayong has resulted in the death of a monk and left a driver critically injured. The collision involved a lorry and a car, with the lorry crashing the car into a roadside house wall. This incident occurred at an intersection lacking traffic signals, a factor that has contributed to numerous accidents in the past.
At around 3.30pm yesterday, December 29, local police in Rayong were alerted to the scene of an accident involving a lorry and a car, with reports of individuals trapped inside the latter. The incident unfolded at the Ban Chak Ta Tang intersection in the Chak Bok area, Ban Khai district. Emergency responders, including medical staff from Ban Khai Hospital and the Sawang Pornkuson rescue unit, promptly arrived at the scene.
Upon arriving, police discovered a white trailer lorry, bearing the registration 83-2093 Rayong, had collided with a silver Toyota saloon, registered as กง-2890 Rayong. The impact was so severe it drove the car against a house wall, causing significant damage to the structure as well as breaking trees and a flashing light pole nearby. The car itself was left in a state of complete wreckage.
Inside the vehicle, both the driver and a monk were found injured. Rescue workers swiftly extracted them from the crumpled car and attempted CPR on the monk. Tragically, the monk could not be revived.
The driver was severely injured and was urgently transported to Rayong Hospital for medical treatment. The deceased monk has been identified as 31 year old Singha Suwanpitak, from Wat Nong Kho in the Nong Bua area of Ban Khai. The car’s driver is 53 year old Santi Suwan.
In a police interview, Chalermchai Suchtan, the 40 year old driver of the lorry, explained that he was driving straight and was unable to stop in time when the car suddenly emerged from the left side of the intersection. This resulted in the unavoidable and forceful collision.
Police have taken Chalermchai into custody for further questioning and legal procedures. Meanwhile, the families of both the deceased and the injured have been notified, reported KhaoSod.
The intersection where the accident occurred is notorious for its lack of traffic signals and has been the site of frequent accidents, often resulting in multiple injuries.
