Indian man jailed for urinating on 70 year old female passenger

An Indian man has been jailed after he urinated on a 70 year old woman passenger on an Air India New York to New Delhi flight.

A New Delhi court sentenced Shankar Mishra to 14 days in prison for outraging the modesty of a woman while police investigated the incident on Saturday, November 26, 2022. If convicted, he faces up to three years in prison.

Indian police arrested the disorderly airline passenger after a woman complained the man urinated on her.

New Delhi Police spokesperson Suman Nalva reported that Mishra was picked up by police in the southern city of Bengaluru and brought to the Indian capital on Saturday.

The Times of India newspaper reported that Mishra confessed to being drunk and shocked at what he had done.

Another passenger on the business-class flight, Sugata Bhattacharjee, told the media that he saw Mishra drinking alcohol excessively, talking incoherently, and repeating the same questions a number of times.

Then inebriated Mishra allegedly muttered…

“Bro, I think I am in trouble.”

Air India, on Wednesday, said they had banned Mishra for 30 days in compliance with regulations following the incident on November 26. The airline said it had reported the matter to the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA), India’s air safety watchdog, for further action.

The DGCA, on Thursday, said, that it had sought details from the airline on the incident, but it appeared that Air India had not complied with provisions related to the handling of an unruly passenger on board.

Air India announced on Saturday that it had grounded one pilot and four cabin crew members after a confrontation between two passengers on a recent flight.

The incident, which received widespread attention on social media and among activists, prompted the airline to issue written notices to the crew.

According to reports in Indian media, Air India took this action in response to pressure from the family of the female passenger, a senior citizen, to punish the male passenger, who has been banned from flying for 30 days.

The crew has been criticized for not summoning the police upon landing in New Delhi, stating that they believed the issue had been resolved between the two passengers.

The airline’s CEO and managing director Campbell Wilson said…

“Air India acknowledges that it could have handled these matters better, both in the air and on the ground and is committed to taking action.”

On Friday, Wells Fargo & Company, an American multinational financial services company, announced that it had fired Mishra, a Mumbai-based executive, in the wake of the incident on the Air India flight.

In a statement, the company cited Mishra’s behaviour as the reason for his dismissal.
