2,455 new Covid-19 cases and 41 coronavirus-related deaths, the highest fatality count since the start of the pandemic, were reported today by the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration. A total of 109,031 people have tested positive for Covid-19 since April 1. Since the start of the pandemic last year, the CCSA has reported 137,894 Covid-19 cases in Thailand and 873 coronavirus-related deaths. Thailand now has 45,256 active Covid-19 cases.

Out of today’s new infections, 497 were in Thai prisons. Thousands of inmates in around a dozen correctional institutions have tested positive for the coronavirus, prompting authorities to consider releasing some inmates to reduce overcrowding and contain the spread of the virus.

Bangkok remains the epicentre in the latest wave of infections with 975 cases reported today. Most infection clusters are at crowded markets and construction camps. Health officials have now set guidelines to prevent the spread of Covid-19 at fresh market which include limiting the number of people at the market and keeping stalls a safe distance apart.

  1. Most Covid patients die due to underlying health conditions, including obesity. Covid, just like flu, kills the unhealthy and elderly the most. However I’m not sure why reporting the data on who had underlying health conditions matters so much. Obviously it gives younger healthier people a sense of security, though after 15 months of living with Covid we all know this fact. If the data then gives ammunition to those who can then claim it’s wrong and madness to limit freedoms and lockdown etc then I’m afraid that misses the point. Being younger and/or healthier may save you if you catch it, but having caught it then you have acted as a carrier and played a role in perpetuating this virus which could go on an kill someone else.

  2. It’s all about the vaccine!!! The vaccine needs to get ramped up by the hierarchy or this could escalate out of control. Thai government you’ve had lots of time to sort this but as always way way too slow!!

  3. It’s all about vaccinating now. As for entertainment and bars etc maybe keep all bars in Thailand closed until the vast amount of people have been vaccinated. Even if it means keeping the bars closed while maybe November or December. Or else this will never end!!

  4. According to the NBT facebook site, the NE had 50. So using the regions figures of Central = 1,846; North = 26; North East = 50; East = 93; West = 311; South = 131 – this gives a total of 2,457 plus the 16 Imported cases (also from the NBT facebook page) which gives a Thailand total of 2,473, NOT 2,455 as stated everywhere including Worldometer. Using the Provincial Totals, they also add up to 2,457.

That’s a difference of 18, but where that comes from in the Provincial / Regional Totals is unknown.

  5. @Boris B – the bars have been closed for best part of a month and infections continue to go up…..perhaps there are bars in prisons, that could explain the explosion in cases. Bars (not clubs) are harmless as majority are not enclosed, the money that is spent in bars finds its way into the economy, and might keep a few more folks in work – picking on bars, as opposed to markets ( been to one lately ?) where hundreds mingle…..and we have seen the recent outbreaks emanating from markets. Clearly the answer is to close all rhe markets, at least until Covid disappears…..

  6. I don’t think it’s the bars as such that are unsafe. It’s how people become careless once they’ve had a few beers. Social distancing tends to be forgotten. Wearing masks when moving from the table to use the toilets etc. Keeping people sober is the main reason for keeping bars closed. That is of course unless the bars are indoors, in which case they become very dangerous as people suffer from all of the above, and in a poorly ventilated environment.

  7. NBT “Today” slide shows –
    Domestic cases 1,210
    Proactive cases 750
    Correctional Facilities 479
    Imported Cases 16
    Total for 26-May 2,455

NBT Regional Total slides add up to 2,457 plus the 16 Imported cases = 2,473

This is 18 more than the reported total of 2,455
