Reuters journalist killed in Kramatorsk missile strike

Reuters journalist killed, two injured in Ukraine missile attack

Ryan Evans, a member of the Reuters team covering the conflict in Ukraine, was killed and two other journalists from the agency were injured in a missile strike on a hotel in Kramatorsk, eastern Ukraine. Evans, who served as a safety adviser, was killed after a missile hit the Hotel Sapphire where he was staying with a six-person team on Saturday. Two journalists are receiving hospital treatment, with one sustaining serious injuries.

Reuters is urgently seeking more information about the attack, working with Kramatorsk authorities to support their colleagues and families. Evans, a former British soldier, joined Reuters in 2022 to advise on safety across various global events, including in Ukraine, Israel, and at the Paris Olympics. He was 38.

“We extend our deepest condolences to Ryan’s family and loved ones. Ryan has supported many of our journalists worldwide; his absence will be deeply felt,” Reuters stated. The three remaining members of the Reuters team at the hotel during the strike are safe.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy confirmed a Russian Iskander missile, capable of striking up to 500 km (310 miles), hit the hotel. In his Sunday evening address, Zelenskiy described the strike as “absolutely purposeful” and expressed condolences to the bereaved.

The Russian Defence Ministry did not comment. Reuters could not independently verify whether Russia fired the missile or if the strike was intentional. The Donetsk regional prosecutor’s office reported on Telegram a British citizen’s body was found in the hotel’s rubble. The missile strike occurred at 10:35 p.m. local time (1935 GMT) on Saturday, with an investigation into the incident underway.
