Going Green: Mövenpick Resort & Spa Karon achieves Gold Green Globe status

Mövenpick Resort & Spa Karon Beach Phuket has become a certified Green Globe Gold member in 2017 having recently received the coveted eco-sustainable certification for the sixth consecutive year, achieving some of the best rankings in Southeast Asia.
“We are very proud of our achievements in sustainable operations at the resort and of our partnership with Green Globe,” said Nick Porter, General Manager.
“The resort is committed to promoting sustainability as reflected in our management principles and daily practices. It is our goal to reduce negative environmental impact at all levels, and encourage our partners, guests and team members to do the same.”
Several activities have been put in place to reduce the resort’s carbon footprint and encourage everyone to be more mindful of the environment, such as several recycling stations located throughout the hotel.
The resort also recently introduced its organic vegetable garden to guests who have booked a Thai Cooking Class at the resort. Thirty minutes prior to the cooking class guests visit the garden with the chef, and choose the vegetables and spices they will use in their food preparation during the class.
In partnership with the National Park Office in Phuket, the resort has planted and preserved in its garden a rare breed of white palm trees, found only in Phuket and known to be on the verge of extinction. These trees are now part of the resort’s Eco-Trail project, which highlights different varieties of flowers and plants available throughout the garden for guests to see.
A fleet of electric tuk-tuks to transport guests around the resort are also available, as well as hybrid cars when picking up guests from the airport. Sustainable maintenance of the 52-rai lush garden is assisted by its own natural wastewater treatment plant, which provides 65% of the daily water consumption in the gardens.
The resort is also committed to working closely with local charitable community organisations. It has partnered with SOS Children Village Phuket, which is home to more than 130 children of all ages. Established after the 2004 Indian Ocean tsunami, this orphanage receives and provides donations of school supplies, food and toys for the children. The resort also regularly invites children to the property to give them a glimpse into the hospitality industry. Mövenpick Resort & Spa Karon Beach Phuket is also offering them internship opportunities and potential employment after they complete secondary education.
