Earlier today, Phuket Provincial Hall played host to an informative workshop, aimed at fostering a comprehensive understanding of the plans to transform Phuket into a renowned eco-industrial city. This initiative was overseen by Phuket Vice Governor Sattha Thongkam, to disseminate knowledge on ideal methodologies for environmental preservation, protection, and restoration across diverse sectors.

The workshop is deemed instrumental in aiding the province of Phuket to attain its ambitious goal of being recognised as a level 1 eco-industrial city by 2027. Eco-industrial parks are a significant part of this plan, propelling sustainable industrial development by optimising resource efficiency via waste material reuse, reported Phuket News.

The eco-industrial city development initiative observed today is in sync with the Ministry of Industry’s MIND policy. This policy aspires to construct and maintain a contemporary, environmentally aware, low-carbon society that strikes a balance between the local community, environment, and industry.

The workshop was graced by an array of attendees including Chaikamon Phromthong from the Phuket office of the Ministry of Industry, representatives from select government agencies, local entrepreneurs and business owners, as well as members of the public.

In his address, Sattha underscored the need to lay the groundwork for the initiative to see the light of day. He emphasised that the establishment of an eco-industrial city would bolster the local community and economy, while simultaneously fostering a healthy environment and enhancing quality of life.

He further stressed the significance of incorporating the MIND policy in relation to economic, social, environmental, physical, and management aspects. He pointed out the key areas of Wichit, Mueang, Thalang, and Sri Soonthorn, each having a pronounced industrial presence.

Chaikamon elaborated on how the Ministry of Industry has earmarked a budget for his office for the year 2024. This is aimed at propelling educational initiatives related to the MIND policy.

He described today’s workshop as one of the steps towards executing the action plan by spreading awareness on environmental management, a step towards achieving the province’s target of becoming a fully-fledged eco-industrial city by 2027.

The workshop, scheduled for today and tomorrow, enjoys the backing of speakers from the Eco-Industrial City Administration Division of the Industrial Estate Authority of Thailand and Prince of Songkla University, Phuket Campus.
