Phi Phi park chief allows additional dive sites
PHUKET: After a lengthy meeting, Phi Phi officials have agreed to allow 18 dive sites to remain open following an incident on Wednesday when a speedboat seriously injured two Russian divers (story here).
“After talking to all relevant parties, we have decided to allow diving to continue at many of the current sites in the park,” confirmed Sarayuth Tanthien, chief of the Hat Noppharat Thara – Mu Ko Phi Phi National Park.
“However, I must still submit a proposal for official approval to the Department of National Parks, Wildlife and Plant Conservation (DNP). In the meantime, the sites are available for use.”
Yesterday, Assistant Park Chief Boonnam Chuyradom declared that only three dive sites would remain open in the Phi Phi archipelago (story here).
“We will be strictly enforcing the rule that allows diving only at Loh Samah Bay, Bida Nai and Bida Nok,” said Mr Boonnam at the time. “Those found diving outside of these areas face a fine of up to 1,000 baht.”
However, Mr Sarayuth later confirmed to the Phuket Gazette the extended list of available sites.
“All local dive companies are well aware of the areas that remain open. We will now inform all affected tour operators as well,” he said.
