Opinion Closely Split On Legalized Gambling

PHUKET: Readers of the Phuket Gazette are split right down the middle on the question of whether legal gambling and casinos would be a favorable development for Phuket. A record 955 voters participated in the newspaper’s poll which closed at noon today. It posed the question: “Would you like to see legalized gambling and the opening of casinos in Phuket?” In response, 43.4 percent said “Yes,” while 42 percent said “No” and 14.6 percent responded “Not Sure.” Thai nationals were more in favour of legalized gambling and casinos, with 50 percent answering “Yes” and 32 percent saying “No.” Local foreign residents were less enchanted by the idea, 40 percent voting “Yes” and 49 percent “No.” Tourists and visitors to Phuket were split more or less evenly, with 43 percent in favor and 42 percent against the idea. Issues raised in the Gazette Poll change at noon every Friday. The current week’s question is: “Would ‘Duty Free’ port status be a good thing for Phuket?” Polls appear on both the Phuket Residents’ Page (www.phket.loxinfo.co.th/~gazette) and on the Phuket Gazette Online at thethaiger.com. In addition, a team of seven staff pollsters works the streets every Friday from 5 to 7 pm, covering Chalong and Rawai, Phuket Town, Patong, and Cherng Talay.
