The American Team went into the tournament yesterday leading 10-6 and only requiring four points from a possible 12 on offer to win the cup.

Europe won the closing singles by 8 points to 3 points and Europe’s players dedicated the victory to the late Seve Ballesteros who died of a brain tumor last year.

The next Ryder Cup is in Gleneagles in 2014.
