A pregnant Thai teenager refused to go to hospital and declined medical help from a rescue team, leading to her baby’s death in a rented room in the southern province of Nakhon Si Thammarat yesterday, February 26.

Neighbours called rescuers to a rented room in the Mueang district of Nakhon Si Thammarat at about 10am yesterday to transport the 16 year old pregnant woman to hospital. They informed rescuers that her amniotic sac ruptured and that she was about to give birth.

Upon arrival, the rescuers prepared to take the pregnant woman to hospital, but she refused. She wielded a knife and threw objects at rescuers who attempted to approach her, forcing them to leave the scene.

The teenage woman’s neighbours contacted the rescue team again at about 2.30pm, reporting that she was bleeding but still refusing to go to hospital.

Rescuers rushed to the scene once more and broke into her rented room, where they found the lifeless baby on the bed. This prompted them to call officers from Mueang Nakhon Si Thammarat Police Station.

Police reported that they found large amounts of blood in several areas of the room. The woman’s 20 year old husband sat motionless next to his deceased child, staring at the baby and refusing to speak to anyone.

Locals told police that the couple worked at a fresh market near their accommodation. They were all aware that the teenager was pregnant, but she repeatedly denied it. Some residents suspected that she intentionally killed her own child.

The baby’s body was transferred to the hospital for an autopsy. Police stated that they would question the couple once the woman had recovered from excessive blood loss.

However, KhaoSod reported a different account, stating that the woman did not intend to kill her baby but was afraid to go to the hospital since she had never received prenatal care during her pregnancy. The media outlet reported that she cried inconsolably after realising that her stubbornness led to her child’s death.
