A Norweigan man was found dead with a slit throat in his rented room in Pattaya, Chon Buri province, eastern Thailand last night. Police are treating his death as suicide.

At 10pm, officers from Pattaya City Police Station were called to investigate the death of a foreigner at an eight-storey accommodation in Nong Prue subdistrict, Bang Lamung district, reports ThaiRath.

Pattaya City Police, the Tourist Police, Forensic Officers and rescue workers from the Sawang Boriboon Foundation travelled to the scene.

On the third floor, in room number 304, police found the body of 58 year old Paal Frode Aaberg of Norwegian nationality. The deceased was lying on his back on the bed.

There was a large, gaping wound on Aaberg’s neck and the bed and floor were covered with blood, police said.

Beside the bed, police found a bloody 15-centimetre fruit peeling knife. Police said no signs of fighting or breaking and entering were found. Police closed off the area and forensic officers collected evidence.

Aaberg’s 40 year old friend Angkhana Roswan testified that at 8pm, she knocked on Aaberg’s door but he did not answer.

Angkhana said she grew worried because Aaberg previously told her that he wanted to die. So she requested that the housekeeper open the door with the spare key.

Angkhana opened the door to find Aaberg lying in a pool of blood and immediately called the police.

The police’s initial examination of the building’s CCTV footage did not flag any suspicious people or activity, they said. The deceased was pictured walking back to his room alone at 3pm yesterday.

Some of the deceased’s friends told police that Aaberg had recently broken up with his Thai girlfriend and had grown quiet. He expressed that he felt suicidal on multiple occasions, his friends said.

Police said that from an initial examination of the scene and from speaking with Aaberg’s friends, they believe that Aaberg slit his own throat.

Aaberg’s body was sent to the Institute of Forensic Medicine to confirm his cause of death.

Just last week, a Finnish expat was found dead with a slit throat in Chon Buri. His wife believes he committed suicide.
