Thailand SSO extends care for stroke and heart disease

The Social Security Board has approved an extension for urgent treatment access for two critical conditions, stroke and heart disease, ensuring care until treatment completion. This initiative begins on April 1 and will run through the end of 2025.

Marasri Jairangsi, Secretary-General of the Social Security Office, revealed the decision yesterday, March 25, at the Social Security Office in Nonthaburi after the 14th Social Security Board meeting chaired by Montri Thirakotai, an employer representative.

The meeting focused on extending access to treatment under the SSO 515 project in collaboration with hospitals capable of enhancing treatment standards for significant illnesses. Previously, the project’s timeframe for stroke and cardiovascular procedures had expired in December last year. The board has now decided to extend the project from April 1 to December 31.

Marasri highlighted the importance of these two conditions, allowing insured individuals rapid access to treatment. Within 15 days, insured patients must undergo surgery, with specified hospitals available for treatment beyond those covered under social security rights. Additionally, robotic assistance will be incorporated for prostate and colorectal cancer surgeries starting April 1.

The Social Security Office (SSO) has developed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with qualified medical facilities to enhance medical services, focusing on two patient groups:

1. Stroke procedures: Treatment for cerebral artery stenosis or occlusion using thrombectomy within six hours of hospital arrival. Forty hospitals are involved, including Chularat 3 International Hospital in Samut Prakan, Theptarin Hospital in Bangkok, Kasemrad Hospital Bang Khae in Bangkok, World Medical Hospital in Nonthaburi, Sikarin Hospital in Bangkok, and Vibhavadi Hospital in Bangkok, among others.

2. Cardiovascular procedures: Seven emergency procedures must be performed within 60 minutes at 12 hospitals, such as the Neurological Institute in Bangkok, Vibhavadi Hospital in Bangkok, Kasemrad Hospital Ramkhamhaeng in Bangkok, Phra Narai Maharaj Hospital in Lopburi, Rayong Hospital, and Buriram Hospital.

From April 1 until December 31, those who are insured can visit designated or other hospitals. These hospitals will provide comprehensive care until treatment completion.

If treatment beyond surgery or designated procedures is required, patients will be referred back to their entitled hospitals for continued care, facilitated by the agreement hospitals, reported KhaoSod.
