Thai officer transferred for hitting the stage instead of the beat

A Thai police officer is under scrutiny for singing on stage while on duty at an entertainment venue in the central province of Ayutthaya. Thai netizens’ opinions are divided.

Several partygoers shared videos last week of a policeman singing in his uniform on stage with the house band. He performed the song 191 by the Thai pop rock trio Labanoon, which includes the popular hook, “Please catch her, police. Don’t let her get away and steal others’ hearts.”

In the videos, the police officer is seen holding a microphone in one hand and a rose, which he received from an audience member, in the other. He sang only the hook of the song before giving the stage back to the house band to resume his duties.

The videos received positive comments from the public, with netizens finding the officer charming as he entertained people. Many agreed that he helped change the image of the police from unapproachable to friendly.

Unfortunately, the light-hearted videos have turned into a controversy for the police lieutenant general featured in the footage. On March 18, Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya Provincial Police issued an official document announcing the officer’s transfer.

The officer was moved from his position at Uthai Police Station to work at the Royal Thai Police (RTP) headquarters, where a special committee will investigate his conduct for singing while on duty. His daily duties will be closely monitored at the headquarters.

Public opinion remains divided, with some agreeing that the officer should be punished for engaging in entertainment during his duty, while others argue that his actions did not cause any significant issues and even helped improve the image of the Thai police.

Some criticised high-ranking police officers for being unfair, pointing out that the punishment for corrupt officers is often delayed, whereas swift penalties are imposed on an officer who simply made people happy by singing.
