Thai father saves 3 children but dies in house fire in Lampang
A Thai father sacrificed his life to save his three children from a fire at their home in the northern province of Lampang yesterday.
Officers from the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Office of Khelang Nakhon Municipality were alerted to the fire at a three-storey building located across from Ban Kad Mek Fresh Market at about 1pm yesterday, February 2. The area was crowded with shops and residential buildings, which were at risk of the blaze spreading.
The first floor of the building was operated as a minimart, while the upper two floors served as the residence of the building’s owner, 52 year old Chatchai, and his three children, aged between eight and 12. The fire reportedly broke out on the second floor of the building.
The three children were found safe on the rooftop but Chatchai was not present. According to his children, their father ordered them to run to the rooftop for safety but did not follow them. They heard him scream in pain before everything went silent.
The children informed police that they were using a computer when they noticed a spark from the device. The spark quickly turned into flames and thick black smoke, prompting them to escape.
After bringing the fire under control, the firefighting team investigated the building and found Chatchai’s lifeless body on the second floor. His arms bore burns, and it was suspected that he had died from smoke inhalation.
Officials have not yet determined the cause of the fire. Further investigations will be conducted to confirm the exact cause of the tragic incident.
In a similar incident, a fire broke out on the third floor of a hospital building in the Isaan province of Ubon Ratchathani on Friday, January 31.
A Thai man was later arrested for setting fire to the hospital. He claimed that he committed the crime out of stress over losing 3 million baht in a real estate scam that took place six years ago.
Fortunately, the medical team managed to evacuate all patients in time. No injuries were reported.
