A Russian man allegedly threw his 13 year old half-Thai, half-Russian son out of a speedboat in the sea off the southern province of Phang Nga on Wednesday, January 22, resulting in the boy being struck by a propeller and subsequently losing his life.

Workers on the speedboat alerted officers from Kuraburi Police Station to the pier in the Kuraburi district of Phang Nga to arrest the 45 year old Russian man, Artem Bugorskiy. It was reported that Bugorskiy intentionally threw his son into the sea while the speedboat was moving.

The boy, Lucas, was transported from the sea to the pier with severe injuries. The boat’s propeller cut his face and head. A rescue team was called to the pier and rushed the boy to hospital, but he later succumbed to his injuries.

Speedboat workers told police they had picked up 33 Thai and foreign tourists from Koh Surin and were heading to the mainland. When the boat reached Koh Ra-Koh Phra Thong, Bugorskiy reportedly stood up, grabbed his son, and threw him into the sea.

Lucas fell into the water on the left side of the boat near the bow, after which Bugorskiy jumped into the sea as well. The speedboat workers attempted to pull Bugorskiy back onto the boat, but he resisted. He also reportedly obstructed their efforts to rescue the injured boy.

Eventually, workers managed to bring both Bugorskiy and Lucas on board and provided first aid to the boy. They rushed back to the mainland as Lucas was in critical condition.

Police initially charged Bugorskiy with intentional murder. If convicted, he faces the death penalty, life imprisonment, or a prison term of 15 to 20 years. The Russian suspect is currently in police custody for questioning. The motive for his actions has yet to be revealed.

In a related incident, the body of renowned Thai actress Nida “Tangmo” Patcharaveerapong was found in the Chao Phraya River in 2022.

Tangmo’s six friends, who were with her on a speedboat the day before she went missing, claimed that she consumed alcohol and fell into the river while urinating at the back of the boat.

Many of Tangmo’s fans and friends were unconvinced by this explanation and suspected foul play. The actress’s death continues to attract public attention. Recently, a group of Thai celebrities staged a reenactment of the case to seek justice for her.
