PM Paetongtarn unveils 10 policies on economic and social welfare
Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra delivered the government’s policy statement to Parliament yesterday, outlining 10 urgent policies to address pressing national issues. The policies cover a broad spectrum of areas, with a focus on economic stability, social welfare, and national development.
The government intends to undertake comprehensive debt restructuring, focusing particularly on housing and auto loans. Both formal and informal debtors will receive support without compromising financial discipline. Ensuring fair competition for Thai SMEs, especially against foreign online platforms, also forms a significant part of the policy.
Plans to reduce energy and utility costs through energy price restructuring were highlighted, alongside negotiating overlapping claims with Cambodia to secure additional energy sources. The introduction of single-rate fares for public transport in Bangkok is another key measure aimed at easing the cost of living.
Revenue generation is a priority, with the government aiming to integrate the informal economy into the tax system. The additional revenue will support social welfare, education, and healthcare.
Prioritising vulnerable groups, the government plans to modernise the agricultural sector to enhance the value of agricultural products. Tourism will be expanded with new attractions like entertainment complexes featuring casinos, hotels, and other leisure facilities.
The prime minister addressed the persistent drug issues, promising a comprehensive strategy to eradicate narcotics and pledging stronger efforts to combat online and transnational crimes. Enhancing social welfare systems to adapt to the evolving societal landscape is also on the agenda. Cannabis regulation will be focused on medical use and youth protection, without recriminalising it as a narcotic.
Paetongtarn emphasised long-term national development plans, which include advancing Thailand’s creative industries, soft power, and digital economy. Infrastructure development, particularly large-scale transportation projects, and improved land management to increase access to housing and farming opportunities were also underscored.
On foreign policy, the 38 year old Thai PM reaffirmed Thailand’s neutral stance in international conflicts. The focus will be on promoting peace and economic cooperation with other nations.
Strengthening the monarchy and promoting a correct understanding of royal duties are also key priorities, ensuring that royal initiatives continue to be implemented, reported Pattaya News.
“It is our commitment to govern with integrity, always placing the people’s interests at the forefront.”
