Phu Sang National Park and Laos join forces to prevent wildfires

Phu Sang National Park in Phayao province has partnered with Laos to tackle the persistent issue of forest fires sustainably. By creating firebreaks, the initiative aims to prevent the spread of wildfires beyond designated areas.

Head of Phu Sang National Park, Bantham Somsuwan disclosed that every year, forest fires frequently occur in the park’s jurisdiction. The majority of this area comprises deciduous forests, where fallen leaves during the dry season provide ample fuel for fires.

Additionally, locals and poachers often ignite fires to forage for forest products, typically during periods when park rangers are less vigilant.

Wildfires have somewhat subsided recently, but a significant cause remains cross-border fires from Laos. Activities such as hunting, foraging, and deliberate arson, especially when individuals face stringent law enforcement, exacerbate the problem.

To manage forest fires sustainably, Phu Sang National Park implemented several measures, including establishing a war room to monitor fire situations comprehensively. Mobile units are dispatched to request cooperation from locals to refrain from all forms of burning within the park’s boundaries.

The park also announces closure periods to prevent entry and minimise fire risks. Furthermore, rangers conduct door-to-door campaigns in agricultural areas to urge villagers not to ignite fires.

Bantham highlighted another unique approach to address the problem by engaging in discussions with Laos. Phu Sang National Park, along with relevant government agencies, has convened meetings to campaign against forest fires, haze, and PM2.5 pollution along the border.

This year’s annual meeting concluded with an agreement to prevent forest fires and the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Phu Sang district in Phayao, Thailand, and Khorb city in Xayaburi province, Laos, reported Khaosod.

The joint efforts between Thailand and Laos illustrate a proactive approach to managing and preventing forest fires. By addressing the root causes and implementing practical measures, both nations aim to protect their natural resources and communities from the devastating effects of wildfires.

The partnership exemplifies how regional cooperation and innovative strategies can lead to sustainable solutions for environmental challenges.
