A concerning situation has emerged in Chachoengsao province, where over 700 stray dogs are reportedly starving at a local landfill, raising worries about potential rabies outbreaks as the hot season approaches. Residents are urging government intervention to address the pressing issue.

Yesterday, January 28, reporters were alerted to the condition of these stray dogs at a landfill in Mueang Hua Samrong, Plang Yao district, covering an area of approximately 5 to 10 rai. Upon arrival, the reporters found the area surrounded by forest, accessible by dirt roads, and populated by dogs gathered in groups of about 20 to 30.

The animals appeared emaciated and fearful, often retreating into the grass. Numerous carcasses were discovered, presumed to be due to illness and starvation.

Pavannapat, a 49 year old local, has been using personal funds to feed these dogs for the past year, providing rice, kibble, and water every few days. Each visit costs about 1,500 baht (US$45) as she purchases two to three sacks of dog food.

Despite her efforts, the growing number of strays has become overwhelming. Pavannapat explained that while she managed to provide some relief, the sheer volume of animals now surpasses her capacity to help.

During the rainy season, Pavannapat installed tarps as makeshift shelters around the landfill to protect the dogs from the rain. However, her concerns are mounting with the upcoming hot season and the risk of rabies spreading among the dogs and potentially into nearby communities.

She has called upon relevant officials to take immediate action to control the stray dog population and prevent a rabies outbreak before the situation worsens. The urgency of the matter is underscored by the sheer number of strays, which exceeds 700, highlighting the importance of a prompt response from governmental agencies to tackle this issue, reported KhaoSod.

Pavannapat expressed her inability to continue supporting the dogs due to limited financial resources and logistical challenges.
